It's really easy to format the sd card so you can use it as a multiple boot device. A simple script (that has commented lines of code that you can easily alter so that you can have more slots or more partitions as needed) is provided that you just run as a one off.. I have had no problems having 16 different images on a 32G good quality sd card. Even if you then remove the sd card the box reverts back to the standard 4 slots. There are also instructions to save the new bootup code just in case of problems with the card. The bootup menu automatically takes into account the extra slots. You just boot into the menu by holding in the front button on the box and download extra images from the network or from a usb stick. You can save and restore images from any slot to any other slot from within most of the latest images, including Openvix, Openpli and Openeight. Also its great to experiment with new Python 3 images like Openvix 6.x and Openbh 5.1.
