No, it won't. He wants to be able to run box A with the MAC from box B. That means that any and every time he wishes to do this he has to:
- switch off B and ensure it stays off (no waking up for any recording)
- start up A

Shouldn't need to set it every time.
Try something like this in telnet when logged into the box:

ifconfig eth0 down && ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:01:02:03:04:05 up
Replace 00:01:02:03:04:05 with the MAC address you want.
If it works, find the startup script to put it in.
