For my pains, I have always used Onkyo amps as they have had enough hdmi/optical for all my boxes, so everything goes through the amps.... and Yes, audio goes to the various speakers and TV hdmi out (Video) to the TV.
When I say everything, thats AppleTv, Sonos, Dune/Mede8er media player, Blurray, Spotify, Airplay (either direct or via AppleTV) and of course the sat receivers .. all controlled via my IPAD app.

bought a new receiver, Denon avr-x3300, using this for all HDMI in and 1 out to TV, so it is good for sound AND picture.
