I always say powered is best, but I have just tested a portable 2.5 hdd in my Solo 4K and its recognised it so it will work by the looks of it. My caddy has 2x usb cables wether that makes a difference?
When I help setup a receiver with no internal hdd option I always recommend one of these >> SanDisk SDCZ43-128G-G46 Ultra Fit USB Flash Drive, USB 3.0, 128 GB https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00YFI1E..._B84hxbXEGZW96

It's just I already have a spare 2.5 inch lying around and I wanted to make use of it. Now you stated that portable hardrive work but whether an internal hardrive into a caddy would work aswell is the question.

I'll have to see which hd caddy enclosures are best.. Any recommendations?

Is there a reason to as why Edision os mini sellers only offer 320G or 500G HDD's and nothing bigger eg 1TB etc? Is it that the larger capacity 2.5 USB HDD's require more power that the board cannot provide?

The 500GB single USB powered drive i had was seen initially but after 10 mins lost power ,completely useless.
Had to use a mains powered adaptor for it to work.

Yep a mains powered external HDD is what you need. This is why I go for boxes with internal HDD capabilities.

ive read that that drives have great speeds, but after just a few minutes have a overheating problem, so im afraid they arent safe, specially for a permanent recording and timeshift solution??!!
