LG has announced a new remote control for its Cinema 3D Smart TVs that adds voice recognition for searching and accessing content.

The Korean firm, which was the main 3D TV device partner for the launch of Sky's 3D channel last year, has already introduced Nintendo Wii-style motion control to its TV remotes.

But the new Magic Remote adds voice recognition to 3D TVs, meaning users can enter text, such as search terms, with just voice commands.

The remote also features a central wheel for users to scroll up and down the various menus, while a 'pointing' function controls an on-screen cursor for making selections.

Physical 'Magic Gestures' can be inputted via the remote as commands, enabling users to control the TV with arm or wrist movements. A 3D button up-converts 2D content to 3D.

"LG has been striving to constantly improve the comfort and convenience with which our customers use the Cinema 3D Smart TVs," said Havis Kwon, the president and chief executive of LG Home Entertainment.

"The new Magic Remote is our latest example, incorporating new functions that will make it easier for users to approach and use the Cinema 3D Smart TVs, particularly our Smart TV function which now has over 1,000 apps and a growing abundance of premium content."

There has been no confirmation as yet on pricing and availability for the Magic Remote.

Voice control is considered a major potential growth area in the television industry, particularly as internet-connected TVs are introducing ever more complex platforms of content and services to the living room screen.

Apple is rumoured to be working on a connected flat panel TV set for launch next year, which it is thought will include the Siri voice control system introduced in the iPhone 4S.
