There is a menu item in OpenVIX 'Menu' / 'Setup' / 'Storage' / 'Initialise devices' which presumably formats the drive.
The vu+ ultimo4k seems to have space for a 2.5 inch or a 3.5 inch drive, presumably SATA.
You should be able to use almost any drive that will fit in your box.
The drive I got from WoS a few months ago in my Zgemma H7S was a 1TB Toshiba L200 which is a 2.5 inch drive as required on the Zgemma H7S.
I don't know if WoS chose these Toshiba drives because they work well in this application but they do seem to have larger internal RAM buffers than most others.
I'd stick with 2.5 inch they're generally pretty robust since they're designed for laptops, unless you need really high capacity (say over 2TB) in which case 3.5 inch may be a better choice.
If you really want to be absolutely 100% sure you get it right in one go it might be an idea to contact WoS, perhaps through their ticket system:
