What is this?
I've never noticed it before and I'm just wondering.
Thanks.

Off-line decode is decoding an encrypted recording. As far as I know this does atm not work on VU-boxes, but only on ET-hardware.
This option has been introduced as some providers (namely Dutch & Belgian) only allow a very limited use of the smartcard. To prevent the card from being blocked by over using it, one can set recordings to be made not-decrypted.
If your provider does not use such a trick, don't worry: make all your recording de-crypted, as they are by default.

Ahh makes sense. I didn't think the VU encrypted recordings since mine doesn't lol.
Thanks for clearing that up.

no thats not quite correct, the receiver does not encrypt them but can record them in their natively encrypted status as rob said some providers have limitations on their cards which makes using multi tuner boxes a bit of a pain. so you can record the encrypted stream to the HDD to decode later without risking your card being de-activated by the provider.

The old trick was to record to your VHS and then you had to wait until some kind soul posted the decryption info on the BBS which you then downloaded to your emulator and as you played back the tape through your sat box you decrypted on the fly - Good old days

The present trick is the same in principle (only with your own, valid smartcard): the recording is encrypted, and de-crypting = playback + record.
