Sky to broadcast FA Cup Final live in 3D

Sky has announced that ESPN's 3D coverage of the 2011 FA Cup Final will air on the Sky 3D channel next month, as part of a collaboration agreement between the two broadcasters.

On May 14, ESPN's 3D production of the clash between Manchester City and Stoke City will be shown live, commercial-free on Sky 3D from 2.30pm. On the day, there will also be 12 hours of FA Cup coverage on ESPN and ESPN HD.

Sky World subscribers with a Sky+ HD box and a 3D TV will be able to watch the match in 3D. It will also be available in more than 1,500 pubs nationwide. ESPN will direct and produce the 3D coverage, including punditry, commentary, studio and on-screen graphics.

The move is part of a 3D sports syndication agreement between ESPN and Sky, designed to bring more 3D sports content to Sky customers.

In February, the two broadcasters teamed up to bring the Winter X Games to UK viewers on Sky 3D, and further collaboration announcements are "due shortly".

"ESPN is extremely proud to have been at the forefront of the development of 3D sports coverage, and are very excited to work with other companies like Sky that are leading the way as well," said Murray Barnett, vice president of ESPN media distribution.

"Sports have proven to be a driver for technology and innovation repeatedly through the years, and that continues today with 3D TV.

"Bringing ESPN 3D's production of great events like the FA Cup Final, the Winter X Games and more to fans on Sky 3D will help showcase the new dimension that technology has made possible."

John Cassy, Sky's recently-appointed director of Sky 3D, added: "Working with high quality channel partners such as ESPN means that we can continue to extend the choice of high quality 3D content for customers.

"With Sky Sports continuing to break new ground, and with the addition of the best of ESPN's live 3D coverage, Sky's customers are enjoying the richest 3D experience available."

Since the launch of Sky 3D in October last year, Sky Sports has produced more than 100 live sporting events in 3D, including Premier League football and Ryder Cup golf.

Next month's UEFA Champions League final at Wembley Stadium will also be available live on the channel, following recent 3D coverage of this year's Carling Cup Final.
