Virgin Media unlocks third TiVo tuner

Virgin Media has today announced that subscribers to its new converged TV service powered by TiVo can access a third tuner, opening up more options for recording and watching content.

Launched in December last year, the new TiVo platform uses the conduit of a high-powered set top box to offer 160 television channels, 4,600 hours of standard and high definition on-demand content, and a variety of apps and games for the TV.

The new system, which also actively learns each user's TV preferences, debuted with twin active tuners for recording programming on one channel while watching another.

However, the cable operator has now activated the third tuner inside the 1 terabyte TiVo set top box, meaning users can simultaneously record two programmes while watching a third.

Customers with TiVo boxes installed won't need to do anything to access the extra tuner as the update is being rolled out automatically over Virgin Media's cable network.

Further updates are planned to the TiVo platform over the coming month, including more digital applications, games and services.

The receiver has a dedicated internal 10Mbps cable broadband modem for delivering bandwidth-heavy services without impacting the user's main broadband connection.

Virgin Media recently said that it would consider upgrading this to 20Mbps via a software patch should there be sufficient demand for services such as 3D content streaming.
All PM,s asking about c/s on cable will be ignored and reported to forum staff!
