The kernel changed on an image newer than yours. When there is a difference in kernel versions, you cannot use the plugin server and more importantly, you cannot perform an online update. An online update thorugh kernel changes is problematic. This is why the restriction was added

    Your option/solution:

Make an image backup just in case you want to use it again
    Create a settings backup
Download the latest image (4.2 023 at time of writing)
    Flash the downloaded image
    Restore settings

Does that mean that the image flashed onto the box Ifearnobeer got was the wrong one for the kernel installed and he was just unlucky? If so will the box i am looking at getting, need a kernel flash before requesting latest Vix image from WOS options.?

The kernels for the receivers change from time to time. Nothoingto do with right/wrong or luck. Just change.

To explain more and for arguments sake......

The image on his receiver is 4.2 101. It has kernel version 5
Manufacturer says to use new kernel version 6
Next image, 4.2 102 gets built with kernel version 6.

Result for people with that receiver:
4.2 101 cannot perform an online update to 4.2 102
People with 4.2 101 can no longer access the plugin downloads as some of those files are built for newer kernel

When a new Kernal is periodically released can you just flash new kernel or is it a case of saving settings from current image, refresh new image with updated image and the reinstall settings?

The kernel is just a (fundamental) part of the image, so you need to follow the instructions for installing a new image.

It happens whenever the manufacturer releases a new kernel. Its not a weekly or monthly thing, but unfortunately its of no fault to ViX or other Image makers.
But its no biggie doing a couch flash and restoring is it? A 10 min job max.
