    Restoring a bricked nano-se-combo

Box previously upgraded to 3.2.037 w/o problems.

Today only one of the USB sticks would get the upgrade splash and began the update but never reached the DONE splash screen.

Switching on the box and there is no response on screen.

Is there anything I can do before trying an RMA?

    TIA.

Try a low level format on USB stick, then format it to fat32, put software on it and try flashing again.

    Still nothing doing.

Should I assume from that, that the bootloader (?) is intact and it's just a matter of getting a working USB stick?

Tried with the following, zeroed and partitioned on GNU/Linux:

    XCENT XT-100 MASS 1.30 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
Lexar USB Flash Drive 1100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
    Kingston DataTraveler G3 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4

The last drive is the one used to upgrade to 3.2.037

    Still no progress .......

no idea on linux but i use a cruzer, kingston or integral 8gb max size usb stick to flash boxes having done a format to fat32 on windows.
download to pc and extract to usb, have box powered off before inserting/removing any cables or usb.no other usb devices connected.please also read flashing guides for that box.

I've read posts of people using HP format tool.

So I'm curious as to the partition layout that's being produced.

Box has power and hdmi connected then usb and finally it's powered on.

The HP format tool looks to be the same as the USB format tool on Hiren's boot cd.

It produces a partition table like this:

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
    1 32.3kB 8003MB 8003MB primary fat32 lba

Anyway, installed Win Xp and the HP format tool and tried again.

    Now tested with:

Lexar USB Flash Drive 1100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
    Kingston DataTraveler G3 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4
SanDisk Cruzer Blade 1.26 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
General USB Flash Disk 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
SanDisk Cruzer Fit 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 6
PNY USB 2.0 FD 8.01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
    TOSHIBA TransMemory 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4

The latter two drives have activity LEDs which flash a few seconds after switch on then return to normal.
No activity LED illuminated on the front panel.

you might have to check if any of those bootloaders can be used with yours,i had an issue where box would not flash and have 3 usb sticks known to work, flashed bootloader then correct file for that box and now working again.i presume you checked the flashing guides of how to flash that box? never assume anything recheck and recheck again correct unzipped image to usb.all the best.

Nearest guide I could find is the nano-se.

Opened the box and it contains an ILX232D (U501) with 13,14 and 15 pins wired to J501 - so hopefully a bootlog tomorrow ....... or a brick.

    Test:

    USB -> 9-pin Serial -> MAX232 to TTL - nothing doing.
    CP2102 board - got gibberish at 115200 8N1

'wondering if TTL is the issue.

not sure if relevant inferior old type boxes like kryptview were flashed with null modem cables and images on an old xp pc with serial port, usb adapters were hit and miss.

where was it said you could use a cable to install files [ i have no idea on that but clones use cables ]?

extracted bootloader files are used on usb stick as i used that route, not seen a bootloader tool for for bootloader file to flash box.

You should not need the ttl adapter. The three pins are Gnd, D+, D-. Connect straight to serial cable.

    boot sequence

Attached should be the output from the RS-232 captured with minicom.

It detects the USB stick and finds the splash.bmp.

    Plug in usb stick
    Hold down front power button.
    Switch on at mains.

That seem to have restored the box.

    Now running 4.1.016
