    Ftp & ftps

    Hi all,

I have diffrent boxes in diffrent houses up and down the country because of this and am using a web address to ftp into these boxes remotely to make any changes i need without having to go to the box. However I was wondering if the FTP protocol used is FTP or FTPS as I would like to use FTPS to make it more secure. Does anybody know anything about this or have any guidance on how to enable FTPS?

    Kind regards,
    Ryan

The box runs vsftp, and it does seem to have everything in place to run FTPS (but you'd need to configure it to actually do so, I think). Not sure whether it can use implicit FTPS (port 990) or only explicit (TLS request on port 21).

The box also runs an SSH server, so you can use SFTP.
However - if you wan to use this to make changes then (IMHO) you might be better off actually logging in using SSH instead.

Hmm..just noticed that the vsftp binary also contains this string:
    Code:
SSL: ssl_enable is set but SSL support not compiled in
and there is no sign of it being linked against an SSL/TLS library.
So it looks as though SFTP/SSH will be needed...
