from a recording to a disc

Hi guys. Brand new member here with a question for you.

I made a recording from sky movies. I am trying to get it from my hdd to a dvd. I have moved the film to USB stick with the hope of copying to disc via my laptop but my laptop says there is nothing there. It shows the file and the file size but wont copy to disc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What file did you transfer (file type)? What size is it?

Are you hoping to play it as a normal DVD movie or are you going to play it as a media file?

So there is something there then!
When you say "copy to disc", what do you mean (in particular - what "disc" is this), and what error message do you get?
And what OS is your laptop running?

Probably your best way to trans-fare the file would be to ftp the file direct to your LapTop via an Ethernet cable, you should only need the (ts) file
also have you got your Laptop set to see all hidden files as their are 6 files recorded to the receivers Hard Drive but you only see the main file on the receiver

ts.cuts
ts.meta
ts.sc
But the only file that you should need is the (ts)file that has most of the main data on it, you are probably better off converting it to a MP4 file first then burning it to DVD I have had great success with Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate to convert the ts file in to a MP4 file then I convert it again to a DVD format with either VSO Video Converter then burn the file to DVD using good old faithful Nero 7 but you could probably burn it in one go it's just that I pref-are to have a MP4 file as a back up

nearly forgot to mention that WinAVI ALL in One Converter is a great program as well

I pressed the "media" button to access the film
I used the "move" function on the tm twin to transfer the film to usb stick
I then tried to convert the file to dvd and transfer it to disc.
I tried to use VLC to watch it on my laptop with no joy.
I tried to use Prism to convert it.
my laptop is windows7 by the way

if someone could give me an idiots guide then it would be appreciated.
im not thick but I can do a great impression of someone who is

That will have copied the meta files too, but they are relatively small.

?? In post #1 you said the file was empty.
You should have seen the other files which came along with the *.ts file on the USB stick - did you?
What did the software you use to created DVDs think of the *.ts file? Was it in the correct format (mpeg - of particular frame sizes)

What are you trying to achieve? Are you just wanting to watch the recording on your laptop, or do you want to create a DVD which would be playable in a DVD player?

VLC should be able to play the original ts format. To transfer this onto a standard dvd mpeg 2 format, I use video redo, but there are other methods.

The first question here should be will the file playback on your Technomate with your local card disconnected? If not then the stream isn't being decrypted to your hard drive in which case you need to a) have a valid subscription that will decrypt sky movies, and b) make sure your recording settings are set to remove decryption.

Which makes it sound as though it's not actually a valid TS file. See the comment about decryption.

That would require software to a) convert it to an MPEG file and b) create the relevant file-structures for a DVD.

"via USB" isn't a method of decoding the video. That would require a PC or a TV - and the issue then is what these are able to handle.
Any PC could handle a (unencrypted) TS file (since VLC will be runnable on it - although it might have to be installed first). A TV might be more picky.

Don't really understand this. I'm just a beginner who wants to learn.

Might be an idea for you to read up on tranferring files using programs such as Filezilla client. With Filezilla it is usually a drag and drop process. There are other programs too.

For now (and when feeds are next stable) , it is even easier to install Samba on your receiver. This will allow you to connect to you PC using windows explorer, you will see your receiver as if it was an extra hard drive on your PC.

Menu > Setup > System > Network > Samba Setup

This will install samba automatically.
