If you are recording to it it is best to have device ext file system. You must initailise (format in windows terms) as youhave mentioned. Ext file system does not have the filesize restriction that fat32 has.

Please be aware that you wont be able to write to a device in ext file ystem it using windows computer directly. There are applications to allow you to read.
You must remove the USB device when flashing by USB.
It is always a good idea to have a backed up ready to use image ready to flash in case things go awry and you are not in the house.

Spot on again abu. I'll make the change tonight.

I use Filezilla to ftp onto the drive. I never use Windows directly to put things on it.

Good advice re backups etc, from your advice when I first got the box I do regular backups and save them on another pen.

Again, as per earlier advice from you, I am aware of the flashing protocol re having this usb drive out of the box before flashing.

Many thanks for your ongoing support abu.

Just in case you were unaware, you can navigate to your receiver using "My Computer/Windows Explorer" and transfer files. No need to use Filezilla if you don't want to.

Still using ftp. Don't see my receiver in Windows Explorer. Pleased to say (fingers crossed) I've had much better results with my recordings since initialising to ext4.

You'd need to install and configure Samba for that.

A version of Samba has been included in image for a while.

Maybe workgroup names need to be checked.

OK. But it won't work until you've configured it (which I don't do as I don't use MS Windows, so don't use CIFS, so have no smbd process running).

Have to disagree. Most users use windows and the workgroup name was changed some time ago to be Microsoft's default so that it just works.
    Code:
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
Obviously you cannot have a solution that fulfills everyone's individual circumstances. But in this case, the majority of users should be fine without any configuration changes.

Not sure what about. All I was saying was that, AFAICT, it doesn't run unless you first configure it to run. However - a further check shows it runs out of inetd, so won't run unless something tries to access it (and when I do it does run).
    Sorry for the mis-information.
