Booting from USB key and leaving in in case of need

I believe advice around here is to flash a new distro from a USB key and leaving in in case of need.

In my case using Vix v70, this seems to have turned the USB into the main boot device.

If I'm right about the advice, is this WAD (working as designed) or do I need to fix something?

For those receivers where you need to press a button on the receiver at bootup to initiate the flashing process, it is perfectly safe and advisable to leave a known working image or full backup on a inserted USB stick in case of emergencies, although you don't have to if you don't want to.
