Want to kill your browsing history with fire? You may need this box

If you’ve been browsing sites you want to keep hidden – for instance, if you’re buying a present for your other half, or just browsing some eye-wateringly hard pornography from your work PC – you might want to take a look at the Anonabox.
Plug it into your PC, and even spies will have trouble working out what you’ve been up to online – it routes all your web browsing through the encrypted online service Tor, beloved of secretive Wikileaks types and international drug dealers.

In other words, it’s as near snoop-proof as you can get.

Normally, if you browse any dodgy – or present-related – sites from a work PC or school network, your web history will be clearly visible to the owners of the network – not if you plug in Anonabox.

The £35 gizmo – funded via KickStarter – encrypts everything you do online, from email to web browsing, and hides your location from wannabe snoopers by bouncing data around thousands of computers on its way to and from yours.

Using Tor is normally a fiddly, tricky process – but Anonabox takes care of all the hard work. You just plug it in and go.

The idea is that corporate whistleblowers and the severely paranoid can bypass filters on sites – such as ISPs blocking sites such as Pirate Bay – or access the open internet from inside repressive regimes.

Porn fiends can also browse from their work desks without the fear that someone in IT might raise the alarm.

Its makers say, ‘The anonabox has been developed and refined for the sole purpose of running the open source software Tor, considered the best and most secure way to access the Internet anonymously.’

‘All traffic coming out of or going into your computer or network is encrypted this way. The result is strong, secure anonymity. Using the anonabox hides your location, as well as all the other personal data that leaks through ordinary Internet use.’
