Link not working, I was thinking about ordering a DVBSky S960 DVB-S2 for my box there around £50, do these work ok for recording premium channels from local card or can they just be used for FTA channels??

I don't have one, intending to get it when I have some money myself but it should behave just like an internal tuner.

    Both are excellent units.

Solo2 in my kitchen/diner, Duo2 in lounge as main receiver. All setup using wifi, got colour LCD set to how I like, only using two tuners on Duo2 at the moment, but will soon have extra feed's.

Imo opinion this comes down to budget, both are excellent receivers.

For me, what made the difference was the hardware transcoding in the DUO2 vs the software transcoding of the SOLO2.
Many people refer to the double RAM as the main difference and think that because they both have a 1.3Ghz dual core CPU that they are the same. That is not the case, one is able to transcode using hardware acceleration, and the other just uses the raw power of the CPU to do it.

This means that the TV feed is turned off in the Solo2 when it is transcoding, which is extremely annoying. Imagine having your wife watching TV at home, while you wanted to watch that important football match final on your phone on your commute from work, and suddenly the TV image at home would freeze.

So if you don't think you'll use that feature a lot and if 2 tuners are more than enough, than Solo2 is for you. But in my case the difference in the final price was justified.

    just my 2 euro cents

    That is not correct:
1- Both the BCM7356 of the Solo2 and the BCM7424 of the DUO2 are not dual-core CPU's, but dual threaded: that makes quite a difference!
2- Both use hardware-recoding as no 1300MHz CPU would ever be able to transcode video on the fly.

But you are correct, and that has always been stated as such: the DUO2 has some more transcoding flexibility/options then the Solo2.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all the help, last few questions before I purchase a VU+ box:-
    1) Does the EPG automatically keep up to date or do I have to manually download an EPG
    2) If I purchase a VU box without a hard drive can I re-use the HD from my current Sky box and keep any recording currently saved on the sky HD
    3) Is there any advantage in reusing my current sky card
    Thanks in advance
    Tomos.

1 = yes, but you will need to set it up first
2 = no if you are still thinking of the Solo2, HDD would be too big. Also, you need to format the HDD so you would lose any recordings anyway.
3 = yes, if you want to keep your sky services.

as far as I know, the Duo2 can take a 3.5" SATA HDD so I'd think yes, but wait for someone else to confirm first...
