    Quad GBLAN update

    As most Quad owners know we got shafted over GBLAN
    Now GB has said that they will give a GBLAN USB 2.0 adaptor (that is far from GBLAN in real life but a little better than fast ethernet) free to owners of Quads which have a certain serial number (the 1st 1000 made IIRC)
    Now saying they will do something and "actually" doing something are two different things so I decided to send them an email, in fairness I did get a prompt reply.

    I have been waiting over 6 months for GBLAN, this is not good!!!!!!
    I see you said your would give an adaptor for free, but as yet nothing has actually happened.
    I am very happy with my Quad but I feel VERY unhappy with the support given.

    So after a wait of over 6 months looks like there will be a wait of getting on for another 2 months

    Does anyone know if these adaptors use up much resources (CPU and memory wise)?

    Do you really need gigabit lan? I have not had any issues with my GB Quad for speed (granted, I haven't uploaded my entire movie collection to it) - but I have streamed 10Gb mkv's without any loading times, skipping, or delays - and as my internet speed isnt over 100Mbs I haven't been affected in terms of download speed anyway.

    Granted, it would be nice, as my entire network is gigabit, but it isn't that big a deal - especially if (in a few weeks) they will be increasing the speed.

    I am very new to this so it is probably that I just havent really had the chance to experience where GB Lan would make an enormous difference - but for now I just cant see it. If it was that important I'd have gone for VU+ Solo or Duo2

    So you don't use a NAS (or any other LAN-attached storage device) for recording?
    If so, you would experience problems with several simultaneous recordings/playback.

    @Shadow81

    Why do you think speed will be increasing soon? The GB Quad runs flat out on 100 Mbit LAN already, no complaints there. It can't go any faster. If you use an external gigabit USB adapter you can go from 12 mB/s to ~30 mB/s therefore 2.5x faster to upload a movie or copy one off to your NAS for storage. With a 20Gb file that takes the time to copy down from 1/2 an hour to 12 minutes (true GB lan would have got the job done in 5!)

    Oh, ok. No, I dont use NAS for recording (only for streaming) - I use the internal HDD.

    I know the overall perks of gigabit, hence my network being gigabit, I just didnt see it as that big a deal on these, but as I said regarding my reasoning for not getting it, seems I was right lol. You guys do a lot more with it than I do :P

    Hehe, of course: if you don't need Gb-LAN, you don't miss it either!
