I had a 1TB in mine and most of the recordings were HD and depending on the channels it can fill up quite quickly.

If you want to set up and forget, I would go for something a bit bigger than 320GB.

You can probably sell the 320Gb and use that towards the 1TB

Is it easy to format with a mac, on the Alien2 I sold to upgrade, this box formatted the hard drive easily

No reason you could not use a USB enclosure and use it that way but its a bitch to open up, literally have to take the box apart

I just bought a Samsung spintpoint HN-M101MBB 1TB which I will be using to replace my existing smaller drive today. I went for the 1TB because it is only marginally more expensive than the 500GB models
    the 320gb drive sucks. I need a 1TB one.

With this hard drive it reads as having 2 x 500gb partitions, is that right, dos it record to both to give the 1 TB easily?

Has anyone tried fitting a Solid State Drive yet? i can get a 500gb one for a decent price and if it works there are no moving parts and obviously no noise !

An SSD has no obvious advantages for an STB.
If your present drive is making noise, something is wrong.

Rob... I haven't even got my box yet, (awaiting delivery today) never mind a drive.... I was only asking because i have access to a 'cheap' SSD. I build and repair computers and laptops so am well aware of what noises HD's should and shouldn't make. If there are no advantages then i will just go for a cheaper 1TB 5400 drive as i can get them even cheaper.

    Thanks.

From all my boxes I can't really hear the HDD. They are either 2.5" or dedicated PVR 3.5" (5400 RPM) drives.

And SSD in an STB can even suffer from extensive wear (as there is no functionality like TRIM).
