25% growth in iPlayer connected TV viewing

The BBC iPlayer has broken the monthly request record set at the London Olympics.

In October 213 million requests for TV and radio programmes were recorded across all platforms, breaking the 200 million barrier for the first time.

PCs remain the most popular platform for watching iPlayer programmes, accounting for around half of October’s requests. However, there was a significant rise of 25% in the amount of viewing through connected TVs. There is also a noticeable upward trend for watching BBC iPlayer on mobiles and tablets.

Mobiles and tablets now contribute nearly a quarter (23%) of all requests, and requests from connected TV devices now make up 20%.

In a blog post Dave Price, head of BBC iPlayer, Programmes and On Demand, BBC Future Media said this was in line with one of the key goals for the iPlayer in 2012, to take viewing onto a variety of different devices.

“We’re now on over 650 devices and these growth figures really show this strategy is delivering for audiences,” he said.

Last month the iPlayer launched on Sky+, making the iPlayer available across all the major platforms, and earlier in the year launched on Xbox.

Even more a shame that the very user-friendly European standard 'HbbTV' has not been used.
