No HD sound I tried it.

    Hi,
Did you hear anything at all?

If ti was pure silence try again and use the optical cable as a connection from the STB to the AVR. My material with HD sound is only in iso and I cannot play it at all.

    ciao

    Yes there was sound.
DTS out via the optical 5.1
But I can't remember over the HDMI, I think I got some sort of PCM downmix.
In the audio menu it did show DTS-HD but I had NO HD sound

OK, I have a few mins so I had had another go.

I was using an M2TS stream from a BD on an external USB HDD.
    HDMI connected.

    The results
Optical conection gives standard DTS (non HD, not possible over optical anyway)
HDMI, with audio downmix on it gave stereo LPCM and with audio downmix off it gave standard DTS.
Last time I tested it, it did NOT give DTS over HDMI only LPCM so I suppose there must have been some change since I last tested it.

Again the audio menu shows DTS-HD.
It would be nice it it did output proper HD sound in the future

The same file will NOT play on a DUO it trys but can't manage it.

Thanks Marty/Rossi for running some test, as you've rightly pointed out, HD audio is not possible over optical (not enough bandwidth) as some of you are aware what we're really after is HDMI pass thru allowing the amp to process the signal, be it PCM, DD true HD, or DTS MA HD... optical will send the core track, for those that understand how blue rays are compiled sonically. Though this is not HD.

This is I believe going to be a real pain to get sorted, I don't believe it's either a Gigablue/Vu+ driver issue but a Broadcom problem.... hopefully when they release the microcode to be able to update the kernel the issue gets dealt with then.

Trail, you say that the Ultimo can stream blu rays from your NAS, does it also handle HD audio?

    Regards
    Peter.

Thanks Rossi for letting me know, shucks that's a pita, the Ultimo is running the most up to date kernel
on Linux boxes isn't it? Over to Broadcom then.

Over the last several years I played with quite a few media streamers (popcorn, dune, netgear etc) the problems they have suffered with the Mega amount of file formats, frames per second, handling of audio and the list goes on is going to prove a real nightmare for satellite rx manufacturers who are new to the game of media streaming.

This is what makes me a bit wary of the claims Vu+ are making for the Duo2 , it's not going to prove to be a particularly good piece of kit as a streamer if it's unable to deal properly with FPS and HD audio.

    Regards
    Peter.

PS, thanks guys for pursuing this, I'm inline to upgrade my duo and I'm not sure whether to keep things simple and get the GB quad or hang on and get the Duo2 which could/will open up a whole new can of worms.

As far as I am aware Vu are working on the 3.6.6 kernel for their new models as are Gigablue for the quad, but they need the relevant microcode from Broadcom to progress further. As Rossi pointed out the xtrend receivers are on 3.6.x and if memory serves the Tm-twin is also on the 3.5 or 3.6 kernel.

Thanks guys for the info, so anyone with an Xtrend>HDMI amp>HD file to see if pass thru is achievable? Their are plenty of downloadable sample files available on the web for testing purposes.

According to vu+ facebook fan page the vu+ user responded with this info just this week

Vu+ Thank you for your interests in Vu+ products. Duo 2 is in the final stage of development. Regarding the release date and price, it will be a few months away until the info is officially published. Thank you for your patience in advance.

    And regarding solo2

Vu+ Thank you for your interests in Vu+ products. Solo2 is expected to be released within this year. Regarding price, unfortunately, we can not give exact price, yet it will reflect the performance to the best. For more updates, please check the official website! Thank you.

So it does appear that there won't be a duo2 around until early next year. Maybe a solo2 can be hoped for before christmas.

i suppose with gigablue quad not bringing sat tuners until Q1 next year at earliest and still with many issues linked to drivers, it might be worth waiting as agonising as it is. Hopefully the vu developers can shed some light on those twin dual tuner in a single slot thing they said would be here by Q3 this year.

And you think VU+ DUO2/SOLO2 wont have any driver issues? VU+ DUO for example has driver issues even after 2+ years.
