IMHO a CPU with those specs will not be able to do any serious video-decoding.

The 128MB flash will undoubtedly be a mistake as well.

I think you might be right poo face. I'm sure I read someone writing in the GB quad section that he was able to play an MT2S files (blue ray) on his quad, try doing that with a 400mips chip, no chance. I can stream DVD rips from my NAS with the duo, no joy with a blue ray ISO..... just doesn't have the grunt. Also it helps to have some CPU headroom when shifting content around a network, it's not just LAN/ethernet speed that counts. I know it's not needed but for those without a NAS Gb Ethernet would have been nice, could have doubled up as a NAS with a esata drive attached..... maybe next time.

I think you'll be surprised Rob... As my post above mentions, I'm sure a GB quad owner says he's managed to play MT2S files, that's no mean feat in itself. What I'm more interested in, can it pass thru via HDMI HD audio.... Dolby true HD or DTS 7.1 HD etc etc.... perhaps if that quad owner is reading this he could give us an answer.

As I said: IMHO such a CPU also lacks the power to do decent decoding.
Of course it is very well possible that the embedded de-coding holds more codecs then the elder generation.

    Just my two cents......

More up to date embedded codecs could be part of the answer but being able to transcode on the fly is a different kettle of fish. Which the duo 2 claims to be able to do.

I intend is to keep my present VU+ Duo but is there a chance it would eventually become obselete with respect to future image upgrades being only availiable for the Duo 2? Also, any ideas what enhancements the Duo 2 will likely have?

no image support wont cease ( at least not from us it wont ), as for driver support from Vu them selves i cant answer that one but i would not worry too much personally, I have a Duo and a Duo LE my self and have no plans of getting rid of them.

    Hi bluepeter,
just for information: at the moment I watch 00011.m2ts of district 9 with my Ultimo from my NAS of the network. As I answered in the Quad thread playing a h264 video has absolutely nothing to to with CPU power. Either the format is know and the chip plays it or you see nothing.

Concerning BR isos it is not a problem with the m2ts files it is a problem with a missing kernel module for UDF 2.5 and for some discs the VC1 codec.

So m2ts is not a feature of the Quad.

    ciao

    Exactly!
And I very much doubt if the Solo2/Quad are equipped to do that. We'll see!

Rob, I don't believe they will be able to either, Broadcom make no claim that the BCM 7356 can transcode on the fly

For support of formats like Flash the CPU-power of the new chips may come in handy.

I'm also interested in the real (= measured) power consumption of the new generation STB's: will the fast CPU have a negative influence on that? They are already quite power hungry as they are.......

    Hi Rob,
I do not think the the power consumption is (a lot) higher/lower then the current E2-STBs. When you think about the heat you will find the hottest spots near the tuner and heat=power.
