Microsoft is reportedly "actively working" on bringing its suite of Microsoft Office applications to Apple's iPad.
The Daily, an iPad-only newspaper run by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, claims that a number of Office updates are on the way, including the launch of Office for iPad.
Other new developments include a new version of Office specifically for Apple's Mac OS X Lion operating system, along with Office 2012 for the forthcoming Windows 8, currently in beta form.
Citing unnamed sources, The Daily claims that versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint for Apple's tablet will cost "significantly lower" than buying the full version of Office.
Apple's existing iPad productivity apps - Pages, Keynote and Numbers - cost $9.99 (£6.40) each, so it is expected that Microsoft's offering will be priced at around the same standalone pricepoint.
The report also claims that the iPad Office apps will be compatible with the Office 365 cloud storage service. It is unclear when the Office iPad apps will launch, but early 2012 is thought likely.
According to the article, Office for Windows 8 and OSX Lion will be released towards the end of next year.
Microsoft's Office system requirements for Mac 2011 currently claim that Mac OS X Lion is compatible, but certain Lion-exclusive features, such as as full-screen mode, are not supported.
