Question who leaves their VU+DUO on constantly ?

Just curious to know your preference if you leave your VU+DUO on constantly rather than on
standby when not in use ?

I know quite a few people couldn't care less either way, but just wondering the general feeling
from anyone in here on this subject.

    Cheers.

Personally I try to remember to leave mines on standby when not being viewed, but a lot of the time I forget and its left on, but I have heard a lot of people on losts of forums including this one saying that they leave the box on all the time and never had a problem for all the years they have had the box, LOL, maybe we should just leave them all on rather than standby, I dont know, my instinct is just to put things on standby, but thinking now, maybe these old boxes like that little bit of heat, hard to say on what stress that really puts on the interior bits and pieces, its a bit like computers too, or computer servers, they can be left on for years, does it make a difference though, thats the thing, hmmm

h difference between 'on' and 'standby' is rather limited; only video and audio outputs are switched off, as well as LNB power (provided there are no recordings or streams), but all the internals stay working the same.
Putting the box in deep sleep (i.e. 'off') makes the real difference, but obviously streaming won't be possible then (but it won't influence recordings).

So are you saying the box can record in Deep Standby mode?

The box will wake up from deep standby for a timer recording.

It should do the recording in standby mode, (my ET10K does 95% of the time), and then go back to deep standby or whatever, depending on what your timer wants the box to do at the end of the recording.

PS. The "Poll" does not have the option of leaving the box in deep standby when not in use.

LOL... not IN Deep Sleep, but FROM Deep Sleep.
But it saves a lot of energy on yearly basis; Deep Sleep power consumption is around 0.5W (provided WoL isn't activated), while standby will be round 15W. So when the box would be used for say 5 hours a day power consumption will drop by around 100KWh/year

but, does box left on without any tv pictures being displayed, I.E- you go out for a couple of days and leave the box on but tv off, does that really have any heavy impact on the actual internals of the machine in reality long term compared to normal standby mode ?

I know it uses a few pennies more per year to leave a box on in electricty costs, but thats not what I am meaning.

Absolutely not; as I said the difference between 'on' and 'standby' is very limited. And for displaying TV the box has hardly any CPU-load.
But on the other hand: what would be the advantage of doing that?

was only asking, that's all, I think I said a lot of people leave them on 24/7, but in reality going by your words which I trust, then it means in theory there really is no advantage or dis-advantage to leaving on 24/7 or switching onto standby mode apart from just a few pennies etc per year in electricity costs by the sound of it which means nothing to the point anyway.

So yeah man, thanks for the info, interesting to know that now as I was always one of the ones that went for normal standby mode when the tv is off, but in reality I don't even need to do that, hmmm, sounds good to me, saves me having to try and remember all the time, lol.

Deep Sleep is the way to go; that is a real money (environment) saver. And easy to automate, no excuses about 'forgetting'.
But I went over that already.

The PSU will be running 24/7, powering all the electronics in the box.
Why overuse the box when you don't need to? It probably won't last as long, especially if you have timeshift switched on.

That's always the case when the box is in standby, as I've pointed out already.

    Good question; no idea.

That's indeed not a good idea, not at all....

Yes, I was arguing the case for deep standby, but never actually mentioned it.

Yes, that's why I point to it again; deep sleep (actually 'off') and standby are often mixed up.

I have never used "deep standyby/sleep" in my life with any box.

But anyway, what's this timeshift you guys are talking about ? If I have never seen it or heard of
it which I haven't then is it something I need not bother about or can I check somehow to see
if its defo switched off or what ? Can you tell me what it actually does and will it effect me in
any way if I switch it off ? Oh, and if I should switch it off then where is it I find it on the menu please ?
    Cheers.
