Fan speed control

Could somebody explain to me how fan speed control is supposed to work under ViX on the TM-TWIN-OE? I think my box might be overheating, but I'm not sure.

On the fan control menu page, there appear to be two sliders, and the main one does audibly change the fan speed, so the fan is working. What I don't understand is how I am supposed to know what to set it to. The receiver manual suggests that the fan speed control is automatic, operating at the speed needed, presumably depending on CPU load and the ambient temperature. This is what I would expect. Why is there a manual setting at all? How do I choose a setting? I never notice the fan speed changing in normal operation.

What should I do about the "standby" setting? Most of the time in standby the box has nothing much to do, but presumably when recording or streaming over the network it is working almost as hard as when nominally "on". How can a single setting be appropriate? I don't want the fan running fast 24/7!

What is a "reasonable" reading for the board temperature that is reported on this page?

On my Technomate I've set the top slider to about 1500 rpm and temp sits around 50.
I set the standby timer to half of the top 1.

There is nothing automatic about the fan speed on your receiver, you have to manually set it to a level you are comfortable with, I always set mine to around a third or half if it's really hot out.

As for standby even though you think the receiver is doing nothing it's actually still running pretty much full pelt, all standby does is kill the audio and video feeds to your TV, every thing else is still live, so set the fan speed for standby accordingly. Only deep standby really closes the receiver down but leaves it so it can power up for recording timers etc.

Thanks for the confirmation. So the statement on the manufacturer's website (http://www.technomate.com/products/TM%252dTwin.html)

"The silent temperature and speed controlled fan cools the TM-Twin only when needed and the speed level can also be adjusted."

is just a lie, I take it. The sales page at world-of-satellite.co.uk also says "temperature and speed controlled fan". It's not clear exactly what that means, but I took the reference to temperature to imply that it was more subtle than "you can set the fan to a fixed speed".

The problem is that it's quite noisy at the high speed that seems to be needed in hot weather. I've been getting random crashes which I think might be temperature related but hard to be sure.

Given that the board appears to have a temperature sensor, it doesn't sound a huge software task to adjust the fan speed as needed to keep it within a reasonable range.

I understand that the box is still doing lots of things in standby, but subjectively it doesn't seem to get as warm. Nor does it crash as often.

I'm thinking of replacing the receiver as this one seems to have all sorts of oddities but it's a bit worrying when you can't believe what you read in the sales literature.

I was was not referring to this receiver in particular but e2 boxes in general, I can't remember if Technomate receivers can wake from deep standby for recordings as all of my Technomates are boxed including the nano 2 super which keeps killing cooling fans. It is true for all of the Vu + receivers I own though.

Though I had missed an update on this and it now worked, but as you say the others will wake up but not the twin

I am having a lot of trouble with my receiver because a couple of times every week when I wake up my receiver from sleep I only see a black screen and the rotating logo in the upper left corner. I then need to power off and power on the box to make it work again. This have happened for a year now and even though I update the software it doesn't change anything. So could this be happening because the receiver gets too hot?

My receiver is normally mid 50s or high 50s degrees in Celsius. Now I have turned the fan speed up to around 80% of max and the temperature is around 53°. Do you guys think this is an OK temperature?

My box sits in a cabinet with the front closed but the backplate is removed so it can ventilate. There is around 3 to 4 cm free space from the box to the top of the cabinet. Is there any other way of ventilating the box, perhaps by using a USB fan? Any ideas would be appreciated, because my box is often so hot that it is not comfortable to touch it.

If you have EPG set to download overnight, best to add and activate a swap file.

That might just be the fastest reply I have ever seen...��The EPG is updating at 8 o'clock in the morning. I haven't heard about this small file before where would I set this up my software?
