I'm a newb so I'm not sure what works best. I read in a few places that we should avoid using flash where we can, this is in case data corrupts and if it does it can overload the flash and crash the box needing a reflash. That was regarding crossEPG data but I figured if I can avoid it (ie I already have somewhere to store it) then why not.

Yes, EPG can corrupt/grow over time so best not save it to flash, USB or HDD fine here, I prefer HDD when available.
As for picons, it's hard for them to get corrupted, so using flash is ideal on any box with enough flash available..

Believe me: as flash is the fastest available storage (and you don't want zapping to be delayed, do you?) and most boxes have plenty of it: why not use it.
Only for some of the boxes that have a limited amount of flash; in that case it's best to divert to an alternative location (although also depending on the amount of picons in use; if only for one or two satellites I wouldn't worry about it at all).

I've formatted the USB stick to ext4 and picons are working now.

When I zap the picons show instantly, I would never notice it being any faster than it is now.

I can't see any good reason not to use good fast memory I paid for.

If you do: please do as you like.
