flshing to latest vix

Morning,
I was asked to upgrade the neighbours box as he was unsure and asked me to help , I have a few questions. The box is on vix at the moment can't say which version but it is old one as the slash screen has waterfall
1, Can't FTP to box as it just says incorrect password, if the box has a password in it set up by the supplier of box
will flash it wipe this out.
2. How can I tell it legit box or clone before I flash as he thinks it a genuine box

1. flashing will wipe out the root password unless you restore settings afterwards.
