The cheapest ones are totally crap..

They are all closed source.. and are basically what you see is what you get..

If you were wanting a cheap Enigma2 box.. That is open source.. and will running on a vix image..

then have a look at either the Gigablue 800SE.. or the Max Digitial XP1000..

You can find both here at out sponsors site..

    ... Gigablue HD 800 SE ...

    ... Max Digital XP1000 ...

If it runs ViX you can also use a secondhand box with a defect (or without) tuner. A LAN-cable is sufficient to see all the channels and recordings from your main box.

The f3's are basic but are the best little box you can buy for under £80. I get mine for £55 delivered to the uk. iv installed around 16 of these boxes for friends and family most use them for multi room also, there's no epg but there's a now and next the HD is what it is really! good enough for a bedroom tv I wouldn't recommend any other box for under £100

it depends on what you want out of the box, if you want the benefits that come with a linux based receiver go for the Gigablue or the max digital.

if you dont want a Linux based receiver i would highly recommend the Ferguson ariva 202E HD. like all non Linux boxes there is not much of a EPG just now and next but HD cant be beaten in my opinion and you have the added extras that go with it such as youtube, youporn and more.

i would seriously stay well away from the f3 and all other skyboxes

xtrend 4000 makes a nice cheap single tuner box so, if you like your current xtrend.

F3/s9 boxes are a pain to update channels.

i have experiance with openboxes/skyboxes and IMO i think there rubish. very basic and slow, cheap and Nasty. you get what you pay for when it comes to these boxes. i went through 4 of them in months as they all kept dieing on me!! i would go wth the Ferguson ariva boxes if you want cheap and basic or something enigma if you want fuctionality.

I have or have had most boxes ..

The box with the best picture quality is the Gigablue 800 SE or the 800 UE..

IMO.. The picture is better on those 2 boxes than they are on any Vu+ box.. That includes the Ultimo and Uno..

Got a skybox M3 with wifi dongle these have the better tuners than the older openboxes/skyboxes

and with this weeks new image you can get youtube and youporn

i also have a Ferguson ariva 102e which i think gives a slightly better image than the skybox M3 it also has a preview mode for youtube/youporn plus the added bonus of Grooveshark on the patched images plus has a few extras like google maps and a couple of more online services
