BBC Worldwide is closing two non-news channels in the Indian market, blaming delays in digitization and the high carriage charges demanded by operators.

BBC Entertainment and CBeebies will close at the end of November. In a statement, the BBC’s commercial arm said it would consider re-launching the channels, should market conditions change.

“We believe India is an exciting market and in the event of changes in the options available to us we would certainly consider re-launching our non-News channels in the market.”

BBC World News remains present in India and the BBC Worldwide has posted out that bbc.com, bbchindi.com, and BBC Hindi radio will all continue to operate in the country.

Global India, produced by BBC Hindi TV, will launch on five ETV stations in the next few weeks.

BBC Entertainment and CBeebies launched in 2007, sharing a single 24-hour channel, before separating with the adoption of the pan-Asia feed in June 2009.
