BBC Sport connected TV app launches on UK TiVos, brings BBC News along

The BBC has today unveiled a new sport app for connected TVs, launching on Virgin Media's TiVo and enabling users to watch all the BBC's interactive coverage for major sporting events such as Formula One and London 2012.

The app, which follows last year's connected TV service for BBC News, is intended to 'seamlessly integrate' linear TV with online and on-demand content on the living room screen.

Initially focused on Formula One, the BBC Sport app will offer all action from the Grand Prix in a single hub, including live streams of races that the BBC has the rights to show, along with on-demand video and additional content.

During the races covered live on BBC One, fans will be able to access alternative options such as on-board cameras and the driver tracker, showing where each car is on the circuit in real time. There will also be full coverage of selected practice and qualifying sessions (the former will not be shown on BBC One).

The BBC's coverage of the F1 season gets under way on April 13, as from this year the corporation has agreed to share the live TV rights with Sky as part of a controversial new agreement.

Over the coming months, the BBC Sport app on connected TV will also offer coverage of Euro 2012, Wimbledon and London 2012 Olympic Games.

The sport app launches today on Virgin Media's TiVo, along with the BBC News app, bringing it to almost 500,000 homes signed up to the converged TV service.

Later in the year, the app will be made available on "a wider range of devices", as part of the corporation's strategy to bring its content to audiences across four screens: the PC, mobile, tablet and connected TVs.

Phil Fearnley, the general manager for news and knowledge in the BBC's Future Media division, said: "We are very excited to be launching our new BBC Sport app and Red Button service for connected TVs.

"Today's launch will ensure we bring our next-generation TV experience to sports fans across the UK, integrating TV and online content seamlessly at the click of a button.

"With predictions there'll be almost 36 million connected TVs installed in UK homes by the end of 2016, the new BBC Sport app is a great new way for these audiences to access the best of BBC's content."

Throughout London 2012, the BBC will offer more than 2,500 hours of content from all events via 24 simultaneous live streams, all in HD and offered online, on the connected TV app and via various digital television platforms.
