Spain’s Canal Plus pulls out of pay DTT market

The venture of Prisa’s Canal Plus in the pay DTT market is coming to an end one and a half year after its launch. The channel will close down its pay DTT version Canal Plus 2 by the end of the month focusing instead on satellite pay TV and its connected TV service Canal Plus Yomvi.

Canal Plus 2 was created to compete head to head with Mediapro-sponsored pay DTT channel Gol TV but it failed to gain subscribers. Only 1,000 viewers subscribed to the service in contrast to Gol TV’s 300,000 pay TV subs.

Its DTT position will now be taken by a new channel called Energy, operated by Mediaset Spain and targeted at male audience.
