YouTube for Schools launched by Google

YouTube has launched a school-friendly version of its site targeting the education sector.

The Google-owned video streaming site has grouped subject matter based on topic and intended age range, and filtered out material deemed as distracting.

"We've been hearing from teachers that they want to use the vast array of educational videos on YouTube in their classrooms, but are concerned that students will be distracted by the latest music video or cute cat, or a video that wasn't appropriate for students," said project manager Brian Truong.

"While schools that restrict access to YouTube may solve this distraction concern, they also limit access to hundreds of thousands of educational videos on YouTube that could help bring photosynthesis to life, or show what life was like in ancient Greece."

YouTube for Schools enables schools to divert all YouTube Traffic towards the educational version of the site. Teachers will be assigned passwords to access its full content. The YouTube for Teachers sister site will advise tutors on how best to use the platform to their advantage.

YouTube for Schools offers more than 400 playlists covering subjects such as science, English, maths and social studies.
