NVIDIA have announced the next generation of their popular 3D solution. NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 upgrades the current system with “sleeker, newly redesigned, gamer-inspired glasses” and new NVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology ™ which the company claims can boost the brightness of certified 3D displays by 2X.

“Gorgeous, bright, crystal-clear 3D worlds are created by NVIDIA’s 3D Vision 2 glasses with 3D LightBoost monitors and notebooks,” said Phil Eisler, general manager of 3D Vision at NVIDIA. “NVIDIA’s engineering team has made incredible enhancements in 3D on PCs, creating a breathtaking gaming experience that’s better than the best Hollywood 3D movie.”

ASUS will be the first desktop manufacturer to sell a LightBoost certified display – ASUS VG278H, a 27inch LED full HD monitor with Dual-link DVI input enabling full HD 1080P 3D gaming. The ASUS VG278H will also feature Trace-Free II Technology (2ms response times) and 120Hz refresh times. Including a pair of the new NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 glasses, the ASUS VG278H is expected to cost approx $700 or £440.

“NVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology makes 3D games, movies and photos more stunning and life-like than ever before,” said David Wung, senior director of product management of Open Platform Business (OPBG) Group for ASUS Computer International. “With 3D LightBoost and our new full-HD monitors, colours are richer, textures and subtle image details virtually jump off the screen, and the overall quality of the experience is something to behold. We are thrilled to be the first desktop display manufacturer to bring this new level of 3D visual quality to our customers with the ASUS VG278H.”

The active/shutter glasses have been redesigned to “provide deeper immersion in games through lenses that are 20 percent larger than those in first-generation glasses, resulting in a wider viewing area and increased external light blocking". The NVIDIA Vision 3D glasses 2 are said to be more comfortable too.

The NVIDIA 3D Vision eco-system now consists of more than 550 full-HD 1080p 3D games and 100 Blu-ray 3D movies. Earlier this year, YouTube 3D started supporting NVIDIA 3D Vision and NVIDIA run a 3D content portal – 3DVisionLive.com so there is plenty of content out there.

The new NVIDIA 3D glasses are fully backward compatible with existing NVIDIA 3D Vision Ready content and supporting products, including more than 70 different 3D Vision monitors, notebooks and projectors, video applications, and cameras. The NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 will be available this month for the recommended price of $149. The NVIDIA 3D Vision kit includes one pair of NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 glasses and a wireless USB IR emitter. The stand alone NVIDIA 3D Vision glasses 2 are available for $99 or £63.

The NVIDIA 3D Vision is different to NVIDIA 3D Vision Pro™ technology which is designed for multi-user, collaborative viewing and production environments, and features long-range, bi-directional 2.4GHz radio communication as explained by NVIDIA Director of Marketing Daniel Sapiro during Dimension 3 earlier this year.

More LightBoost-compatible displays from Acer and BenQ are expected to ship in the coming months.

It was also announced today that Sony Vegas Pro 11, Sony’s editing software popular with stereoscopic editing professionals, will also support NVIDIA 3D Vision.

3D Focus TV will be soon reviewing the NVIDIA 3D Vision 2 system.
