Hi - maybe i should make a correction - I posted above that the Western Digital Caviar 1TB - WD10EARS SATA 64MB Cache was fine...but I have now realised it will not initialise (in the Dream elite image at least) . back to drawing board!

Can you try flashing with official image to initialize the HDD and report back please.

    I'm using a SAMSUNG F3EG HD203WI 2TB 5400RPM SATA2 drive.

I couldn't initialize it using the DE image I was running but judging by other comments this isn't unusual - flashed a PLI image and initialized it and then reloaded DE.

Just fitted a Samsung 1.5TB HD154UI Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen, took several attempts to initialize the HDD until it was recognised (with OpenPLi and then the latest official image), but when I tried to record, a message would appear to inform me that the HDD was not initialized.
Working OK now, although when I went back to OpenPLi the problem returned, just hope I don`t need to do this with every image upgrade.

    Using a 2.0TB Samsung HD203WI SATAII 5400rpm 32MB cache.
Was internal so qualifies, but is currently connected via eSata so I can keep a better eye on any temperature problems.
