    BBC Intermittently Fails to Record

I'm finding that BBC, normally 1, fails to record a timer programme. For example this evening I switched on the box from completely off - we had just arrived back from France - at about 1730 and did a manual bouquet maker scan followed by a CrossEPG download. I then put the box into standby and it went in deep standby 10 minutes later on the auto deep standby power timer. BBC News is on an auto timer.
The box completely failed to wake up from deep standby and record BBC1 news at 1752 - 3 mins before programme start.
I manually switched on box and it started recording.
The ABM is also set to update at 1748 daily. Providers are FreeSat UK Yes, Sky UK No
The ABM log shows Schedule Enabled at Sun 27 Oct 2024 173041 GMT
CrossEPG has Sky UK OpenTV selected - tick in green blob
And in XMLTV UK/Ireland selected - I have no idea what XMLTV is?? Is it over www or from satellite?? Or both??
I've noticed that at the end of the epg update, a rytec web address appears at the top of the screen in the black bar. But the box is not connected to the www.
It is all a bit of a pain.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks.

Well it could be because of the time change and No internet access? Depends on how the box syncs time

XMLTV EPG providers are internet based. As your receiver is not connected to the internet, best you disable the XMLTV ones.

Some people delete the EPG cache and refetch EPG when the clocks change. It solves most issues. I've never had to do it though.

Thanks. It has been happening for a while, so nothing to do with time change. When I switched on box in UK, is rebooted, the displayed time was correct.
I'm not knowingly using xmltv - I just don't know what they are.
I'll try deleting the EPG cache.
What about VPS?? - will that start recording more reliably??

I am not too familiar with vps, @joe90 uses it more often and will hopefully chime in. It should just adjust for last minute time changes.

To me it seems that your receiver is not waking up for the timers as opposed to the timer being wrong. As it is waking up daily for ABM and CrossEPG, the time is correct. Maybe one for @birdman to look at.

I don't think VPS will make the recording any more reliable. It just tunes to the channel due for recording a configureable number of minutes before the timer is due to start and then holds off until the flag for the programme start is received. It's only of real use for BBC/ITV/CH4. I, too, think that the box is not waking up because it either hasn't got the correct time OR the EPG is not up to date OR AutoTimer hasn't scanned the EPG and set a timer. If you are going to be away from the box for an extended period, you must schedule an EPG update every day or two, and ensure that the AutoTimer has sufficient time to run while the box is up, before putting it back into deep standby.

Its main use is to extend an overrunning recording once it has started.

Yes - it will do that. It will also delay the start of a recording until the programme actually starts. I do this all the time for BBC/ITV/CH4

Currently I have a power timer to reboot daily at 1745. Then ABM at 1745 and CrossEPG at 1752. The first item to record is the 1800 BBC news. Which it sometimes fails to do.
It also failed to wake up for Newscast at 2300ish last Thurs, having been on for a few hours during the evening.
With VPS I have 3 options - No, Yes safe mode and yes. With no explanation of the 2 yeses??
And on BBC2 Solar System timer just now – vps plug in couldn't check if selected channel supports vps.
    So, somewhat confusing.

VPS is not the issue here unless you have a problem with EIT data. The various options with VPS as far as I can tell from using it - YES means use the start timer exactly to begin recording and then end the recording when the next programme starts. NO means don't use VPS, just the normal timer. YES safe mode means start the recording at the scheduled time even if the EIT programme start flag has not been seen. The recording will end when the next programme start flag is seen. I have the "check if channel supports VPS" flag set to OFF. Technically VPS is an option used in German TV channels, but the plug-in works with the major UK channels which have automated playout systems that send a "programme running" flag at the start of a programme. BBC/ITV/CH4 have such systems. CH5 sends a programme start flag at the EPG scheduled start time even if the programme has not started yet, so VPS is useless in this instance.
If you press the GREEN button you can see the schedule of timers for the next seven days. You should see a timer list of BBC News for 1800 each day. Send a debug log if you have one for a missed event or the one immediately prior to a missed event.
