It does not matter whether you use a USB stick or an internal HDD/SSD. If you press menu in image manager you can decide which storage device to use. After you have created your image backup, best to transfer it to your PC and keep safe. That way if you cant get into your box, you can always flash the image.

That being said, do you really need an image backup? A settings backup using Backup Manager instead of Image Manager can be used after you flash a new vix image.

    menu/setup/vix/image manager/ menu (again)/image manager settings/backup location

    Then
menu/setup/vix/backup manager/press green to backup the image

For a backup of setting substitute backup manager for image manager.

This assumes both your usb stick and ssd are mounted

The gotcha could be if you have an automatic backup configured on an image update it will try and find the backup location you have set which, if you have set the usb stick and removed the stick, it will not find.

If it's on a USB stick, that is also easily available - just unplug it...

You know, I have never thought of that in all the years I've been playing with Vix images. I replaced the hard drive in my VU Ultimo4K last month. It never occurred to me to keep the backups on my PC. Thank you, backups are now stored on my PC

I assume that the SSD is in your box.

    i) With a FTP program on your PC such as FileZilla. You will see the contents of your SSD and be able to move files in either direction - pc to box or box to pc

ii) Samba, menu/setup/network/utilities/samba make sure samba is running.

In windows explorer you should be able to see your box, under the network heading, and its hard disk/SSD and you can than copy/paste or click and drop files between the box and PC
In the windows search box you may have to type "\\your box's ip address" without the quotation marks and provide a user name (by default the box's user name is root) and the password you have set up on the box

Did you try either the FTP or samba methods?

Plug the USB stick into your box.
Set the backup location as the USB stick.
    Make the backup.
Unplug the USB stick from the box.
Plug the USB stick into your PC
Copy the backup file from the USB stick to your PC.

This assumes that the format of the stick can be written to and read from by both the PC and the box.

If running a Microsoft Windows PC and if the USB stick is formatted as Ext3/4 you may/will have to jump through some hoops and find a third party software program for the PC that can read the formatted USB stick.

Generic Instructions which may be slightly different depending on the FTP program you are using
FTP programs have two windows - one will show the hard disk on the box and the other will show your PC

In the window showing your PC navigate to where you want to save the backup file.

In the window showing you box go to the HDD where you have made the backup - navigate to the imagebackup folder and you should see all your back up files.
Highlight the file you want to transfer to your PC and right click on it - you will probably get a new pop-up menu with an option saying download or transfer. Select this menu option and the file will transfer to your computer.

Example using the Filezilla FTP program

    Before transfer.

    After transfer.

NO! You should unmount the USB stick before removing it (or shutdown the system).

But, as I noted earlier, if it's on a USB stick there's no real point in copying it to a PC as you can always unplug it when the box is off anyway (and it will be if you are about to do a USB flash...).
