How long is a piece of string?
My current laptop, used extensively every day, is 4 years old but now showing signs of mechanical ageing. Some of the legend has rubbed off from the keys, the mousepad is sticking and one of the USB ports has stopped working. I could replace both keyboard and mousepad myself with new parts costing approx 80 GBP but will probably invest in a new faster laptop with solid state storage.
My previous laptop, still kept as a working backup, lasted around 6 years until the screen hinges broke and at the time was running an old version of Windows. The replacement laptop (that I'm using now) was much faster, thinner and lighter.
