Brand New SF8008 Canīt change Root password, enable FTP or Flash mmc.zip.

    Hi,

Flashed reovery with openvix-6.0.004.release-sf8008_recovery_emmc. So far so good...

Tried to continue flashing with openvix-6.0.004.release-sf8008_mmc.zip but it cant find the image it says..
Unit boots up fine anyway with new image but I canīt enable FTP. Also added the network password.

Telnet works, so I tried to change password there for the root account. it gives me "Authentication token manipulation error"

    root@sf8008:~# passwd
    New password:
    Retype new password:
    passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
    passwd: password unchanged
    root@sf8008:~#

Checked access rights and reset them
    mount -rw -o remount /
    ls -l /etc/shadow
    chmod 640 /etc/shadow

Problem remains and Iīm running out of ideas..
    Anyone come across this?..

New images need password setup on box with remote first and saved + write it down as bad memory and will be forgotten.

If using Filezilla you will have to enter your new password to gain entry.

In any case you don't need to flash the unit again (you already have openvix on it). The openvix-6.0.004.release-sf8008_recovery_emmc file is for flashing by usb. The openvix-6.0.004.release-sf8008_mmc.zip is for flashing using the image manager (but if you need to you can download it directly from the image manager). Its rare to need a usb stick to flash a receiver.

I had the same problem on one of my boxes as I usually set passwords with putty.
A full reboot sorted it for some reason. Not sure if I can post external links but some help here:

I had much the same thing as original post describes maybe a couple or more months back now after having cause to flash a recovery image (in my case my own builds and largely based off ATV). For that reason I think this maybe some OE-A wide issue (perhaps just on the 5.0 Python3 branch?) rather than image specific. I put it down to recovery image mounting the partition as read only hence root password etc. can't be changed, but I could be wrong here, just what made sense when I looked into it at the time.

Anyway long story short, flashing the recovery image in the first place did sort out the original problem I had, flashing again then with the standard image (not recovery) then sorted out the setting root password issue.

I would flash using ImageManager - do not restore setting
Then use Telnet session to set password via passwd.

I alkways do it this way - never had an issue… even on the sf8008 which has always been historically my problem box
