Gigablue UHD UE4K (Openvix)
80 cm 2 Universal LNBs (Hot Bird, Astra 19°) to DiSEqC then to Gigablue
60 cm Sky Dish Quad LNB one cable direct to Sky HD+box, 2nd cable to DiSEqC then to Gigablue
65 cm Dish (16°) to DiSEqC then to Gigblue
Zgemma H7S (Openvix) Now used as a backup box

External hard drive has own power? (Although seen many posts were a hdd has dropped - but doesn‘t kill box).
Suspicious on hdmi switch - how is CEC configured?
Might be worth reflashing receiver as a starter

Although that did happen over an hour before the crash.

Thats the emmc and used (i believe ) only by the receiver at boot up time

Yes there is no sd slot on the H7 - it is the emmc
Zgemma H7S running OpenVIX 6.2, Darkmotor, Triax TD110 dish, Inverto Black Ultra dual lnb
LG 50UM7450 4K TV, Pioneer VSX-534 Atmos AVR , Panasonic UB820 region free 4K Bluray & a PS4.
OK. (Just that mmc is usually the SD card - the generic term is Multi-Media Cards).
But that write error was over a day after boot time.

Not always a good idea, the recommendation would usually be for the HD to have its own power supply.
any recommendations?

You could try using a powered USB hub.
How will that work? At the moment the hard drive is connected to the set top box by a usb cable, mini usb from hard drive to usb 2.0.
