    Timeshift is consistantly seriously broken

If I'm watching something quite long on live TV like a film and pause to take a phone call and after the end of the call I unpause and delayed playack of the programme continues.

But if there are adverts and I try and skip over them with the number number keys I soon come to a point where if I overshoot and need to skip backwards I find I can't and I miss a part of the film.

Happened just now with "The Stanford Prison Experiment" on ITV4.

It's unacceptable for a timeshift feature to do this.

Record the programme instead, I've never used timeshift, and I've had boxes capable of doing it for probably 20 years.

Just avoid hitting "real time", chase playing recordings doesn't like it either, but at least you don't lose anything.

You should be able to skip back over a program boundary using the > or < keys (not the left, right keys in the up, down, left, right, ok cluster) I will admit it is the most annoying long time bug in the software that timeshift does not necessarily like program boundaries and can apparently do some funny thinks like finish one program then immediately skip back to the start of the same program rtaher than carry on to the next program (or continue through the adverts). I have timeshift automatically enabled to start 10 seconds after changing channels.

Why would timeshift even have been made aware of program boundaries?
Why would anyone think that made any sense at all?

There is an option to save the event/program.

But the boundaries are often wrong in the EPG.
That's you can have it always add x minutes before all recording and y minutes after.
Presumably I crossed a boundary in the EPG last night that was actually just after the second half of the film started.

    Nothing is ever simple.

It was a depressing film anyway.

... I can't imagine news bulletins breaking up a film into two halves will help the cause using timeshift, particularly if you want to save the recording.

Hit record first (add recording indefinitely) and then pause the next time the phone rings. I know it doesn't fix the actual problem but it will do the trick. Maybe you you like to brush up your coding skills and have a poke at the system innards?

Edit: Sorry that doesn't work as such. But when you come back to the TV start playing back the recording and you will be fine.

Look at a recording (progress bar) and you will see the broadcast program start and stop markers. When starting to watch a recording you can hit the > key and skip straight to the start marker, bypassing any padding. (again the > key that is not part of the up, down, left , right, ok cluster)
