Are you really on 5.3.007 (Menu/Information/About)?
Yes I am on 5.3.007. Installed it yesterday and also shown in the Menu/Information/About). However I restored my settings and plugins from my previous image if that means anything.

I edited the line by deleting some keywords, not the whole line, saved it, but the keywords are still shown in the GUI.

No, I don't know what "init 4" is. I deleted the entries on my PC via the network.

That's why your edit didn't work - see abu's signature for details of how to use unix commands (telnet or putty).

When you've made the changes, use "init 3" to restart the box.

I want the feature because if the history is filled (10 entries) and I tip in a new one, it might delete one I still need. Then its better to have control over which entry to delete.

Ok - that's a different requirement. You would want an entry to remain on the list, rather than fall off the end if you perform more searches? It just strikes me as though it is creating a whole list management issue, potentially. The way it is at the moment, if you perform similar searches regularly they should remain in the last 10 list somewhere.

The function to delete a single search or the whole search history via GUI does not exist.

10 is the default, you can increase the number and ignore any entries you don't want.
