Its really a vendor decision ..... there are a number of Arm receivers (some not supported by ViX) that support hardware multiboot by basically partitioning the eMMc into mountable drives that contain E2 Images and provide the ability to select an Image at boot up time ...... this depends on the vendor e.g. Mut@nt use a different method from Gigaqblue.
Can it be done by Vu+? Well Octagon committed on the SF4008 but have never implemented multiboot - so I guess it depends on priorities and development money!

If an HD51 has multiple images, what happens when it is powered on? Is it possible to ensure that a particular image is booted if the box is not interfered with?

Normally when you restart from standby or deep standby it will start from the last image used.
If you long press the power off button, you can select multiboot and choose which image you want to reboot.
You can decide to always just use the 1st image “slot“ in which case it will only start from this image.

So in ImageManager does the ATV zip show up in the image list (I assume you have installed the ATV zip (dont unzip) in your ImageManager images library (press Menu in ImageManager to see where that is... should be on HDD or USB)

When you select the 2nd slot and press enter on the 2nd slot, do you see then the unzip msg??

Otherwise turn on debug logs (menu/setup/system/log/settings -> and set log location to hdd or usb)
Try to flash and post debug logs

As @twol says, “Do Not Unzip the Image”, are you sure you are not unzipping it as it wouldn’t be called hd51??

    1) the ATV image should be like : openatv-6.2-mutant51-20181124_usb.zip
    2) the zipped file should go in the directory imagebackups
    3) where is your imagebackups file located? flash, usb or HDD and how is it mounted (ViX plugins/Mountmanager)?
    4) if HDD is it internal or external and if external does it have its own power supply?
    5) if Yes to above, then as posted in #20 turn on debug logs and post here.

abu baniaz has made a great guide for open multi boot. Just type open multi boot in the search strip (top right hand corner) and you shall find it.

I think that sthe open multiboot plugin.
The HD51 and some other receivers have built in multiboot - there is no need for the plugin

How to flash a second image as multiboot

Multiboot is good for Beta testers etc. I always go back to ViX as I think its the most polished image of them all.
As for your external HDD, you really should have a power source to it as you can run into problems.
Can I ask why you went external as apposed to internal, especiall with it being capable of having an internal HDD (Mut@nt HD51).

Hi Thank you for your reply.
Actually I used to have Technomate HD5400 box and it was not able to support internal HDD. I am using my old HDD.
