Best way to return to factory defaults is to flash an image. Do not restore settings/backups

No it wont. The term factory reset is very misleading as it will not return the receiver back to factory condition, all it does is wipes the user area of the currently installed image.

When I got mine I obviously cocked something up with it as it started lagging really badly. I tried a factory reset which didn't help. The only thing that worked was re-flashing it from a USB stick at the rear of the machine. I set it up again and it's worked perfectly since. There are plenty of guides on here on how to re-flash it. It's really simple.
