ITV has acquired the rights to hit US animated sitcom Family Guy, one of the most popular programmes on BBC3.

The new series of the Seth MacFarlane creation will air exclusively on ITV2 when it returns in the autumn, along with other MacFarlane shows,American Dad!, The Cleveland Show and new series Bordertown.

ITV director of television Peter Fincham said: “Seth MacFarlane’s shows have firmly established him as the comedy voice of choice for an entire generation. Seth is sharp, hugely irreverent and brilliantly funny, which is reflected in his fantastic shows. We are delighted to be welcoming him and his comic creations to ITV.”

Family Guy, about to begin its 15th season, was consistently one of BBC3’s most popular shows since 2007 – with around half a million viewers tuning in to the latest adventures of the Griffin family. The move to a different channel was inevitable, given that the BBC is migrating a lot of BBC3’s content onto iPlayer ahead of its closure, and US carrier Fox banned it from being put online for free.
