BT is set to impose a price increase of over 6 per cent on its home phone and broadband customers in a move that has already been called a “football tax” by some analysts.

BT, who has 7.3 million home phone and broadband customers, said that from December 1st the cost of a BT landline – mandatory for phone and high-speed Internet – will rise by £1 (€1.20) to £16.99. At the same time the cost of its broadband service will also rise by up to 6.49 per cent. The hike is nearly four times higher than the current rate of inflation.

In 2012 BT paid £738 million to show 38 live Premier League football matches over three years. It has since added a £1 billion deal to broadcast the Champions League from next season.
