Can't connect via null modem cable

I tried to flash an old dm500 with the commando image and something went wrong. After flashing the box wouldn't boot but was getting an ip address for a few seconds and then it would lose connection. I tried to connect via rs 232 and several dreamup versions but nothing worked. I've also tried another dm500 with the same cable and it won't connect either. The obvious answer would be a faulty cable but I've used the cable successfully before (about 2 months ago) I'm using windows 7 professional could it be a driver issue?

Same result with two receivers would indicate cable/driver issue.
