not sure what you need mate but a tar.gz file is a compressed collection of files. To extract these files ftp them onto your box in a directory you want to extract into and in telnet do: -
    gunzip filename.tar.gz
    tar -xvf filename.tar

This will result with all the files extracted to that location but not sure this is what you need.

I always find it easier to ftp the file to tmp to the tmp folder and then do a manual install.

send tar.gz file to folder tmp
log in via telnet to the box,
change with "cd /tmp to the folder and type (without "" and changing filename to actual filename)
"tar -xzvf filename.tar.gz -C /" and press enter

I've just tried this, but I only get an error message. "Cannot remove old file..." Maybe it is impossible to install a new image this way? I have an old IP900HD, and the latest image I want to try, is in tar.gz.

I think the first thing is to establish what the file is.
Is it a plug-in, a driver or what?
