As the tournament reaches its final stages, the BBC has announced it will broadcast selected matches from this year’s Wimbledon Championships live in 3D to homes across the UK, as part of the BBC’s two-year trial experimenting with 3D production and distribution.

The matches included in the trial coverage will include:

The Ladies’ Singles semi-finals
The Gentlemen’s Singles semi-finals
The Ladies’ Singles final
The Gentlemen’s Singles final

The free-to-air 3D coverage will be available to those with access to a 3D TV set and to the BBC’s HD Red Button service. This is one of a small number of 3D TV editorial experiments the BBC is currently undertaking, which has also included selected coverage from Wimbledon 2012 and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The initiative is in addition to what the BBC describes as its most comprehensive digital coverage of Wimbledon ever this year, increasing the number of live streams available across four screens – PCs, mobiles, tablets and connected TVs – from a maximum of six in 2012 to a maximum of 10 this year. In addition, up to three streams will be available through the Red Button for viewers on cable and satellite and Digital Terrestrial TV.

Kim Shillinglaw, Head of BBC 3D, said that major UK sporting events were a big part of its trials with 3D content and the coverage allowed the corporation to build on its work from previous Wimbledon Championships and the London 2012 Olympics.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the Wimbledon experience and the 3D TV trials will allow us to do that by exploring the boundaries of live sporting television,” said Mick Desmond, Commercial Director of the All England Club.
