Sky has teamed up with Atlantic Productions to launch a new 3D production company, as well as agreed new 3D content partnerships with Disney, MTV and Discovery.

The satellite broadcaster, which today agreed a joint Formula 1 rights deal with the BBC, wants to secure the maximum amount of 3D content for its Sky 3D channel, launched last October.

It has teamed up with Atlantic Productions, the maker of Sky 3D's BAFTA award-winning Flying Monsters 3D documentary, to create a brand new production company focused on developing 3D programming.

Sky said that 3D content made by the new company, called Colossus Productions, will be shown first on Sky 3D, before being distributed to other broadcasters around the world.

Atlantic is currently filming a new 3D series about plants at Kew Gardens for Sky 3D, and a feature documentary titled The Bachelor King 3D, both presented by Sir David Attenborough.

Anthony Geffen, the chief executive and creative director at Atlantic Productions, will also serve as creative director of Colossus Productions. Atlantic remains fully independent under the deal.

"We're delighted to have formed this new venture with Sky, who've once again demonstrated their belief in the power of 3D storytelling," said Geffen.

"With the support of forward-looking broadcasters like Sky, we believe there's a real opportunity for the UK production sector to take a world-leading position in 3D. The formation of Colossus Productions will engender the creation of exciting 3D content to entertain audiences worldwide, and the pedigree of the company will attract top talent from across the industry to work on these projects."

Sky 3D director John Cassy added: "The BAFTA award-winning Flying Monsters 3D showed just how stunning and genuinely immersive great 3D TV can be. Working alongside Anthony and his talented team will help us continue to deliver the highest quality home-grown 3D content to our growing number of 3D subscribers."

Sky said that this "multi-million pound" investment in Colossus demonstrates its continuing support for UK production, following on from a commitment earlier this year to increase its annual investment in original homegrown programming by 50% to £600 million a year by 2014.

The satellite broadcaster has also agreed 3D output deals with Disney, MTV and Discovery Networks to secure more content for the Sky 3D channel.

The MTV deal covers episodes from the channel's World Stage 3D series, including performances by Snoop Dog and the Kings of Leon.

Discovery, which has also partnered with Virgin Media, will bring a range of 3D documentaries to Sky 3D, including 3D Safari and Beautiful Freaks.

A range of Disney's 3D films will become available on the channel, including Toy Story 3, Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, Tron: Legacy, Mars Needs Mums, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and Fright Night.
