Sony has made internet voice calls service Skype available on its Bravia TV sets, as part of a firmware update introducing a range of new services.

The free upgrade enables Bravia TV owners to make free voice and video calls over the web via Skype to anywhere in the world. Consumers will first need to purchase a camera and microphone accessory to access the service.

Other new features in the firmware update include the ability to control Bravia TVs using the Media Remote app available on Android-based smartphones, along with the iPhone and iPad. The free app is designed to make entering text on TV screens easier than typing with a standard remote control.

Bravia TV owners can also now log in to their Facebook and Twitter accounts through their TV sets, and send messages or set status updates on the big screen.

Sony's Bravia Internet Video player already offers a range of on-demand content, including live concerts from Moshcam and extreme sports coverage from fashion brand Billabong.
